Huntingtower Castle (HS)
Huntingtowerfield, Perth
Huntingtower, or House of Ruthven, as it was called before 1600, was a lordly residence for about 300 years from the 15th century to the 18th. With the downfall in 1600 of Lord Ruthven for trying to assassinate the king, the name of Ruthven was abolished by Parliament and replaced by Huntingtower.Huntingtower once consisted of two self-contained tower houses built just nine feet apart. The two towers were linked together in the late 17th century in an apparent attempt to make the mediaeval castle look more like a country mansion. The castle has a particularly fine painted wooden ceiling of about 1540. This was hidden behind later pine panelling and only uncovered in 1913. Shop and picnic area.
