Castle Campbell (HS)
Dollar
Dramatically situated on a narrow ridge in Dollar Glen, ‘Castle Glume’or ‘Castle Gloom’as it was once known, became the lowland stronghold of the Campbells. In 1489, by Act of Parliament, it was re-named Castle Campbell. The original late 15th century tower with its cramped accommodation was extended in about 1500 with the spacious hall and chamber range being added. Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle from 9th to 12th January 1563. She had come to attend the wedding of the Earl of Argyll’s sister to James Stewart, Lord Doune.
During the Cromwellian period, the castle was garrisoned by English soldiers. It was attacked and burnt in July 1654, and has remained a partial ruin every since. Shop, picnic area and tea room.
