Craignethan Castle (HS)
Lesmahagow
The last great private fortress to be constructed in Scotland, Craignethan was begun about 1530. It was built for Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, an illegitimate son of the first Earl of Arran. Sir James did not live to enjoy his castle. Accused of treason, on the basis of trumped up charges, he was executed in 1540. The castle, with its large if somewhat squat tower house, was protected by artillery fortifications of revolutionary design and massive strength. It continued to be lived in until the mid 17th century when Andrew Hay bought Craignethan, and built himself a modest residence in the outer courtyard. In the 19th century, Craignethan acquired a new fame when it was identified with the ‘Tillietudlem Castle’of Sir Walter Scott’s ‘Old Mortality’, a stirring tale of the Covenanters. Shop and picnic area.
