Tolquhon Castle (HS)
Tarves
The oldest part of this Forbes stronghold is the square early 15th century tower. With its massively thick walls and small rooms the tower provided cramped accommodation. William Forbes inherited the property in 1547 after his father was killed at the Battle of Pinkie (near Edinburgh). Many years later, between 1584 and 1589, William extended the castle to form a spacious mansion around an inner courtyard. The highly ornamented gatehouse, with its drum towers and coats of arms, is designed to impress. Inside the castle the hall, gallery, kitchen with its bread oven, brew-house and pit-prison can still be seen. Shop, picnic area.
