Braemar Castle

Braemar

Braemar Castle presents itself to us today as a museum filled with the day to day furnishings and personal memorials of 200 years of the family's history. In each of the rooms you will find fine furniture, beautiful paintings and many items of historical interest. This unusual looking castle has changed greatly over the 400-odd years since it was built by the Earl of Mar in 1628. Burned out on various occasions, the castle was repaired by the government after the 1745 rebellion to provide a base and accommodation for soldiers. Another storey with strange battlements and a surrounding curtain wall with musket loops were added at this time. The soldiers who were stationed here patrolled the surrounding glens to prevent cattle stealing and to ensure that no-one wore the traditional highland dress. The castle has belonged to the Farquarsons of Invercauld for the past 200 years. It is fully furnished with many items belonging to the family. On display is the world’s largest Cairngorm Crystal weighing 52lbs and a piece of plaid worn by Bonnie Prince Charlie.Guided tours, gift shop.
