Balfour Castle
Shapinsay
An impressive Scots-Baronial castle built between 1846 and 1856 for David Balfour of Westray. This family had made a fortune in India and he invested heavily in Shapinsay, even building a coal-fired gasworks. The house, furnished much as it was when the Balfours left, is full of character.
The guided tours include a complimentary tea with homemade cakes.
