Westray

A diverse island sometimes called the ‘Queen of the North Isles’, it has good beaches and at Noup Head, outstanding cliffs with huge numbers of breeding guillemots, razorbills, and kittiwakes. At Pierowall the main village, is the massive Noltland Castle.

Neighbouring Papa Westray is reached by a frequent passenger service from Pierowall. Equally interesting it is said to be source of Christianity on Orkney. The pre-Reformation Church of St Boniface is well worth a visit as the Stone Age village of the Knap of Howar.

The North Hill reserve has one of the biggest colonies of arctic terns in Britain and is the place where the last great auk in Britain was shot.
