Bothwell Castle (HS)

Home > Unternehmungen > Attraktionen > Historic > Castles & Stately Homes > Bothwell Castle (HS)

In a beautiful setting by a loop in the River Clyde, Bothwell is the largest and finest 13th century stone castle in Scotland. The original donjon, or circular tower, built by the Morays, still stands. The Wars of Independence saw the end of the Morays of Bothwell. Sir Andrew Moray died probably of wounds received at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. His father and both of his grandsons died in English prisons.

The castle was captured by Edward I – Hammer of the Scots – in September 1301 after a famous siege. Over the next two centuries it changed hands several times, and was added to by each successive owner.
