This traditional Lewis thatched house is fully furnished, and complete with attached barn, byre and stackyard. A peat fire burns in the open hearth, with smoke filtering out through the roof. At one time all the houses on Lewis were built like this, with double thick walls and thatched roofs. From the 1850s they came to be known as ‘black houses' to distinguish them from the new ‘white houses' with lime mortared walls and slate roofs. Nearby a furnished 1920s croft-house is open to view. There is a new visitor centre with displays on crofting and the construction of blackhouses. Shop.
